Genetical and Cytological Studies in Allium I. Spontaneous and Induced Variations of Chromosome Number in the Pollen Grains of Tetraploid Allium Odorum L

چکیده
Since L. Guignari's investigation (1884) various investigators have reported the studies on plants in the genus Allium of Liliaceae, as some species in this genus are cultivated and are noteworthy from the cytological point of view. According to T. Suto's papers (1936, 1936) on the phylogenetic discussion of Liliaceae and Amaryllidaceae, which show the fact that the idiogram type of the chromosomes in Allium is LN (Lilium-Narcissus) type, there are eighty species, seven varieties, nineteen teratological species and other two species in Allium already studied from the view-point of chromosome number. 58 species and one variety have been investigated by Levan in Sweden. It is apparent that chromo somebasic number of Allium plants is x=8, although there are some exceptions which show n=7, 9, and 12. Despite all the facilities for cytological treatments in the liliaceous plants, the genetical studies based on the external characteristics have not advanced very much, because of the general degeneration of sexual reproduction in them. For several years, the writer has been engaged in the genetic-analysis as well as the cytological observations of Allium plants. In this paper the writer gives a detailed description on the distribution of chro mosomenumbers mainly in pollen grains of a tetraploid species, A. odorum, which is cultivated commonly in Japan.

Karyotypic Variation of the Aloe vera L. and Aloe littoralis Baker in Iran
Background: We describe karyotypic variations and the in vitro methods for plant propagation and conservation as well as detailed chromosomal analysis of (Aloe vera L.) and Aloe littoralis from Iran during flowering stage. Objectives: This karyotypic was discovered because of a difference in the position of the chromosome and due to genomic differentiation in domesticated pop...
متن کاملInduction and identification of polyploidy in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) medicinal plant by colchicine treatment
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is one of the important medicinal plant species. In order to produce an autotetraploid population of basil (Ocimum basilicum) by colchicine, different concentrations (0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50 and 0.75%) and four treatment methods were examined (seed, the growing point of seedlings at the emergence of cotyledone leaves stage and emergence of true two type leaves stag...
متن کاملStudy of Genetical Correlation and Diversity of Morphological Traits Induced in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Mutant Population of Hashemi Cultivar
Mutagenesis has been one of the important sources of genetic diversity and Plant mutants can be important bio-resources for crop breeding and functional genomics studies. Breeding conventional methods for generating of genetic variability are of low efficiency. We showed that treatment of seeds of rice(Hashemi cultivar) with 0.8% EMS for 8 h caused visible phenotypic variations on M2 rice mutan...
متن کاملChromosomal Aberrations Induced by Chemical Mutagens in Allium
The effect of chemical mutagens on the induction of mitotic chromosomal aberrations in diploid Allium cepa and tetraploid Allium vineale has been studied. In inducing chromosomal aberrations in case of both diploid and tetraploid Allium all the mutagens were found to be effective . Mitotic irregularities were higher in tetraploid species as compared with the diploid species. All types of chemic...
متن کاملCytological Effects of Blitox on Root Mitosis of Allium cepa L
The genotoxic potential of blitox (fungicide) was investigated by using chromosome aberration in Allium cepa root tip cells. Allium cepa roots were treated with 2g/lt., 3g/lt. and 4g/lt. concentrations of blitox and distilled water as control at 4 hours, 8 hours and 12 hours duration. The results indicated that blitox significantly increased the genetical abnormalities at all concentrations and...
